Tagan works in our litigation office. She specialises in criminal law, regularly appearing in the Nelson District Court and Nelson High Court on matters ranging from traffic offences to more serious charges, including violence, drugs and sexual offending.

Tagan advises on issues such as name suppression and bail; she is non-judgmental and discrete.  In addition to being a criminal defence lawyer, Tagan also appears in the Family Court and has an interest in medico-legal work. She acts in obtaining and defending protection orders and advising on parenting matters.

Tagan received a Master of Laws degree with honours which was focused on criminal and medical law. She is an approved legal aid lead provider in both Criminal and Family law.

Recent experience

Tagan has been involved with:

  • Attending Police interviews & advising whether to make a statement;
  • Defending those who have mental health issues;
  • As a criminal defence lawyer in jury trials on a range of charges including: drugs, assaults, sexual offending and dishonesty offending;
  • Acting as a defence lawyer before the Health Practitioners’ Disciplinary Tribunal;
  • Appearing in the High Court as a defence lawyer in New Zealand’s first Human Trafficking trial from November 2015
